Colombian President Visits Haiti to Strengthen Diplomatic Partnership with Port-au-Prince

July 20, 2025

On July 18, 2025, Colombian President Gustavo Petro arrived at Toussaint Louverture International Airport, marking his second official visit to Haiti. This trip reflects a shared commitment to deepening security and diplomatic cooperation between Colombia and Haiti, amid growing instability in the region.

During his first visit in January, which took place in Jacmel, President Petro praised Haiti’s historic role in Colombia’s independence and signed a bilateral cooperation agreement spanning key sectors such as security, agriculture, and technology. He also offered an official apology to the Haitian people for the involvement of Colombian nationals in the assassination of former President Jovenel Moïse in July 2021.

This latest visit underscores those earlier commitments with a symbolic gesture: the official inauguration of the Colombian Embassy in Port-au-Prince. The move signals a new phase in the relationship between the two nations, oriented toward a more structured diplomatic, security, and economic partnership.
