Canada Extends Protection Measures for Haitians Residing on Its Territory

December 1, 2025

The Canadian government has announced the extension of special measures benefiting Haitians already living in Canada, as well as foreign members of Canadian families, in response to the continuing deterioration of security in Haiti.

Introduced in May 2024, these provisions will remain in effect beyond November 20, 2025. They allow eligible individuals to apply for an open work permit, a study permit, a temporary resident permit, or an extension of their temporary status—entirely free of charge.

Ottawa says the extension aims to ensure the protection of beneficiaries while avoiding any additional financial burden.

Canada thereby reaffirms its commitment to providing concrete and humane support to Haitian families and all those seeking refuge amid the crisis in their country of origin.
