UN Secretary-General António Guterres met in New York with Anthony Franck Laurent Saint-Cyr, President of Haiti’s Transitional Presidential Council, on the sidelines of the 80th session of the General Assembly. The UN chief welcomed the progress set out in the transition roadmap, while stressing that only unity among national actors can ensure its success.
The two leaders agreed that swift, coordinated international action is essential to restore security in the country. They emphasized combating gang violence, creating the conditions for inclusive elections, and mobilizing increased humanitarian aid.
The meeting took place as the 2025 General Assembly is held under the theme “Better together: 80 years and more for peace, development and human rights.” Debates are addressing global challenges—from the climate crisis to wars—but Haiti has been highlighted as a case requiring an immediate response.
Haiti’s voice at the UN thus found a direct relay with the Secretary-General, who pledged support for efforts to pull the country out of its security deadlock. The success of this initiative, however, will depend as much on the willingness of Haiti’s authorities to remain united as on the international community’s ability to move from declarations to action.
