Haitian Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé announced that the electoral decree project should be adopted as early as next week in the Council of Ministers, as consultations with political parties enter their final phase.
In an interview granted to the newspaper Le Nouvelliste from Rome, the head of government particularly supported Article 139 of the text, which requires political parties to have at least 30,000 members or supporters before being able to present candidates in elections.
According to Mr. Fils-Aimé, this provision aims to better structure the Haitian political landscape and reduce the multiplication of candidacies without a genuine popular base. He believes that a party called upon to participate in elections must demonstrate a minimum of national representativeness.
The Prime Minister also argued that this requirement could encourage groupings between political formations and contribute to the organization of more credible elections. In his view, this reform should promote a renewal of the political class and meet the population’s expectations regarding governance and institutional stability.
