Since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse, Haiti has plunged into an unprecedented political and institutional crisis. In response to this impasse, Alliance 20-24 has proposed an ambitious roadmap to pull the country out of abandonment. According to its coordinator, Me Annibal Coffy, mass poverty and widespread violence are a “national shame” requiring immediate and inclusive solutions. The lack of political vision within the Presidential Transition Council (CPT), coupled with corruption scandals, has deepened the despair of an already burdened population.
Alliance 20-24 calls for a political conference bringing together the signatories of the April 3, 2024 agreement, representatives of the CPT, and other actors committed to democracy and security. The initiative aims to revise the agreement to ensure its implementation by a competent and honest executive authority. Establishing a national unity government to restore public trust is also a priority. This government, the organization emphasizes, must commit to organizing transparent and inclusive elections within a reasonable timeframe.
The group proposes replacing the CPT, deemed ineffective and widely unpopular, with a three-member presidential council. These representatives would be selected by the Court of Cassation, the University, and the political sector. This proposal aims to establish pluralistic and representative governance, breaking away from current practices perceived as autocratic and corrupt. The urgency of structural change has been underscored by a 100-million-gourde corruption scandal involving CPT members.
During a meeting in Pétion-Ville, Me Annibal Coffy reminded attendees that Haiti must “regain its soul.” He emphasized the integration of the general population and social cohesion as essential pillars for the nation’s recovery. For him, building a new public opinion through progressive and inclusive initiatives is imperative, as is ending the exclusions and discrimination that weaken Haitian society.
Alliance 20-24 also positions itself as a force for international advocacy. The organization advocates for strengthened cooperation between Haiti and global democracies while highlighting Haiti’s historical contribution as the “land of human dignity.” It encourages citizens to engage civically and foster dialogue among the country’s various social and political forces.
In a context where the current administration has proven incapable of addressing the challenges of the political and humanitarian crisis, Alliance 20-24 is renewing its call to action. Its vision for a successful transition hinges on national consensus and the mobilization of all vital forces. For Me Coffy and the organization’s members, the goal is not to “settle for the scraps of a declining power,” but to “pick up the pieces of the country” and rebuild it on solid foundations.
