Pierre Damas Bel, a 20-year-old Haitian student living in Springfield, Ohio, died by suicide on August 31, a tragedy his family attributes to the loss of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and the wearing of an electronic bracelet imposed by U.S. immigration authorities.
Arriving in the United States in 2023 with a pending asylum application, the young man had just started university and dreamed of becoming a neuroscientist while pursuing a career in college football.
On Instagram, he denounced the humiliation of being treated “like a criminal” and explained that the device compromised his athletic ambitions.
According to his relatives, he suffered repeated mockery.
Religious leaders and migrant advocacy organizations believe that this death reveals the human consequences of the hardening of U.S. immigration policy toward former Haitian TPS beneficiaries, calling for an urgent political response.
