An unexpected archaeological discovery was made in Grande-Rivière-du-Nord, in the Nord department, where several ancient weapons were uncovered during excavation work for a pit within the grounds of the Conservative Baptist Church. Alerted, the National Bureau of Ethnology (BNE) quickly deployed a specialized mission to assess the significance of these remains.
Led by the BNE’s Director General, Erol Josué, with the support of archaeologist Dr. Joseph Sony Jean and a technical team, the mission conducted initial observations at the site. Experts proceeded to document the discovered objects and carried out a preliminary scientific analysis to establish their origin and age.
During their visit, specialists also met with the mayor of Grande-Rivière-du-Nord, representatives of the Haitian National Police, as well as officials from the church and the concerned school. Discussions focused on security and conservation measures to be implemented to protect the artifacts during ongoing research.
The BNE indicates that investigations are continuing to precisely determine the manufacturing period of the weapons and their historical significance. At this stage, no details have been released on the exact number of objects found, but the institution believes that this discovery could enrich knowledge about the region’s history and contribute to the preservation of Haitian cultural heritage.
