April 17, 2026 marks a significant turning point in relations between Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
Gathered at the CODEVI Industrial Park, at the border between the two countries, delegations led by Haitian Minister of Foreign Affairs Raina Forbin and her Dominican counterpart Roberto Álvarez took an important step toward normalizing bilateral dialogue.
This meeting follows the joint declaration signed in 2021 by Jovenel Moïse and Luis Abinader, which serves as a roadmap for exchanges between the two states. It also reflects the willingness of the government led by Alix Didier Fils-Aimé to prioritize dialogue and regional cooperation.
Key issues discussed included border security, migration flows, and trade.
Both parties agreed in particular to strengthen monitoring mechanisms along the border, in a regional context marked by persistent security challenges.
The most notable announcement, however, remains the reopening of airspace between the two countries as of May 1, 2026, allowing the resumption of flights between Cap-Haïtien and several Dominican cities.
A strategic decision aimed at boosting economic and human exchanges.
The delegations also reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining ongoing dialogue, welcoming the support of the international community, particularly the United Nations, in efforts to stabilize Haiti.
