Son of Jovenel Moïse Demands Justice and Rejects Extradition to a Collapsed State

July 26, 2025

In an open letter dated July 23, 2025, Joverlein Moïse directly addresses Marco Rubio, current U.S. Secretary of State, regarding the still-unresolved assassination of his father, former Haitian president Jovenel Moïse. He describes the killing as a “tragic turning point” for Haiti, but emphasizes that the vision and dignity of the Haitian people were not buried with him.

The author openly accuses a corrupt economic elite of not only orchestrating the country’s chronic instability, but also the assassination itself. “These powerful oligarchs have invested in, infiltrated, and paralyzed our judicial system—with the complicity of silence,” he writes.

Joverlein Moïse also implicates the United States, where several suspected perpetrators reside freely and without consequences. “How can crimes planned on American soil be ignored by a country that claims to be a model of justice?” he asks.

He argues that extraditing suspects to Haiti, given the current state of institutional collapse, would amount to abandoning any hope of a fair trial. In his view, only courts with robust safeguards can ensure justice in a case involving defendants with vast financial resources.

Rejecting any accusation of interference, he frames his appeal as a cry of dignity from a clear-eyed generation. “This is not a call for intervention, but a call to recognize a moral obligation in the face of this immense tragedy,” he declares solemnly.

The letter concludes with an appeal to American conscience, urging support for a wounded yet resilient nation. “Haiti wants to step out of the shadows and walk with pride once more—but it needs sincere allies to make that possible,” he writes.
