The United States Embassy in Haiti recently held a virtual dialogue with a dozen Haitian students participating in the Fulbright Program. Ambassador Dennis Hankins and the Public Diplomacy team spoke with them about their academic journeys. Together, they discussed the challenges they face and their adaptation to university life in the United States.
Despite an initial culture shock and the emotional strain of being far from family, the students report that they are thriving. They also stated that they are actively sharing the richness of Haitian culture with their host communities. “We are pleased to learn that they are thriving,” said the Embassy in its statement.
The Fulbright Program, launched in 1946, offers thousands of scholarships each year to candidates from around the world. For Haitian students, it represents a unique opportunity to pursue graduate studies at prestigious American universities. It is also a powerful tool for both personal and national development.
Several former Haitian Fulbright scholars are now influential professionals in the fields of education, health, and technology. These young ambassadors of knowledge embody an ambitious Haiti, oriented toward excellence.
