On January 16, 2025, the Bank of the Republic of Haiti (BRH) recognized 24 journalists from various media organizations in Port-au-Prince, awarding them certificates for completing a six-month training program in economics. This initiative, designed to enhance journalists’ understanding of economic issues, was part of the Economic Training Program for Journalists (ETPJ). The ceremony took place at the Caribe Convention Center, attended by notable figures such as BRH Governor Ronald Gabriel, Minister of Economy and Finance Alfred Métellus, members of the Central Bank Council, and media directors.
In his address, Governor Ronald Gabriel expressed his satisfaction with the success of the program’s second edition, highlighting that it was initially launched in 2017 during his tenure as Coordinator of the Central Bank’s Training Institute (IFBC in French). Emphasizing the significance of the program, he stated:
“We believe that having young journalists trained in economics is a valuable asset in reducing information asymmetry and shaping the economic expectations of stakeholders.”
Jonasson Odigène, a journalist at Magik9 and Le Nouvelliste and the representative of the participants, thanked the BRH for this unique opportunity to deepen their economic knowledge. He encouraged the continuation of such initiatives, proposing a second-level training program to further enhance journalists’ expertise in economics.
Florient Jean Mari, Coordinator of the IFBC, congratulated the participants on their dedication and perseverance throughout the program. He also acknowledged the trainers’ commitment, noting the highly favorable feedback received. This collaboration underscores the critical role of partnerships between financial institutions and media professionals in promoting accurate and accessible economic information.
Minister of Economy and Finance Alfred Métellus applauded the BRH’s initiative, announcing future collaborations between his ministry and the Central Bank to develop similar projects. These efforts aim to strengthen journalists’ skills, ensuring improved public understanding of economic issues and fostering the delivery of high-quality information.
