In a recently published statement, the signatories of the April 3, 2024 Agreement, which include influential political figures, voiced concerns over the deviations of the Transition Presidential Council (TPC) from its initial mission. They have called on CARICOM to initiate discussions regarding the Agreement’s non-implementation and consider dissolving the TPC.
The signatories criticized several decisions they deem contrary to the spirit of the transition, including the unilateral dismissal of Garry Conille as Prime Minister and the controversial appointment of a government led by A. Didier Fils-Aimé, seen as biased. They argue these actions violate the foundational agreements and demonstrate a desire by certain actors to retain power at the expense of national interests.
Moreover, the signatories recommend the removal of Council members implicated in corruption scandals to restore institutional credibility. They also condemned the authorities’ failure to address the surge in gang violence, which has recently resulted in hundreds of deaths.
The group emphasized the need for broad national consultations to establish stable governance and ensure civil peace. They urged CARICOM to act as a mediator in this crisis by revisiting the commitments of the Agreement and fostering a transition that aligns with the aspirations of the Haitian people. According to the signatories, only a concerted approach can offer a path forward for the nation.
