Port-au-Prince Lawyers Sound the Alarm Over Government Inaction

April 2, 2025

After eleven months of transition, the Presidential Council has failed to stabilize the country, leaving the population at the mercy of rampant gang violence. In response to this alarming situation, the Port-au-Prince Bar Association is urging the authorities to take responsibility for the consequences of their inaction.

Lawyers in the capital denounce the rapid deterioration of security conditions, which they believe is being orchestrated by hidden forces. They highlight the encirclement of neighborhoods by gangs and criticize the government’s failure to address the forced displacement of civilians.

They lament the absence of an effective criminal justice policy despite ten months of governance. Rather than combating organized crime, judicial authorities remain passive in the face of arms trafficking, drug trade, and human trafficking.

The Bar Association strongly condemns the irresponsibility of the country’s leaders, accusing them of prioritizing personal agendas over the national interest. It reminds state institutions of their obligations and demands immediate action to combat insecurity.

Finally, the lawyers call on the transitional government to acknowledge its failures and put an end to the mismanagement of public resources. They reaffirm their commitment to defending the rule of law and ensuring that justice prevails in the face of the regime’s failures.
