National Civil Aviation Office Guarantees Continuity and Safety of Air Operations in Port-au-Prince

December 1, 2025

The National Civil Aviation Office reported “an impact in the form of an opening on the structure” of a Sunrise Airways aircraft, a finding noted during preliminary inspections on November 23, 2025. The OFNAC specifies that technical, operational, and security investigations are ongoing and that a detailed report will be released “as soon as possible.”

Despite this anomaly, the OFNAC states that “flight operations to and from Port-au-Prince are continuing normally,” while announcing the immediate reinforcement of security measures at the airport site. Authorities maintain heightened vigilance to ensure continuity of service and the protection of users.

Early journalistic sources report that the aircraft was hit by gunfire during its approach or landing, reigniting concerns over security around the airport area. Local authorities and the airline are conducting assessments to determine the exact origin of the impacts and evaluate the extent of the damage.

The broader security context explains the decisions made by operators: recent episodes of gunfire near the airport and the presence of armed groups have previously led to temporary closures and international restrictions on flights. This situation has prompted foreign authorities (including the FAA) and several airlines to limit or suspend their rotations to Port-au-Prince for safety reasons.

For the same reasons, Sunrise Airways issued a statement on November 23, 2025, announcing the “immediate suspension of all arrivals and departures from Port-au-Prince until further notice,” explaining that this measure is “strictly related to safety” to protect “our passengers, our crews, and our operations.” The airline also indicates that it will assess the damage sustained by the affected aircraft and keep the public informed regarding the resumption of flights.
