Mouvman Fanm EDE Denounces Violence Against Marjory Michel and Calls for Respectful Politics Towards Women

December 27, 2024

The Mouvman Fanm EDE (Women Movement EDE), affiliated with the political party Les Engagés pour le Développement (EDE), has expressed its deep indignation over the physical assault on Marjory Michel, former Minister for the Status of Women and a key figure in the Democratic and Popular Sector (SDP). The incident, which occurred during a political meeting at the El Rancho Hotel on Saturday, represents a serious breach of democratic principles and gender equality in public spaces.

In commending the resilience and courage of Mrs. Michel in the face of this intimidation, Mouvman Fanm EDE underscores that such acts of violence against a committed woman extend beyond personal attack. They signify a broader threat to democratic progress and a violation of women’s fundamental rights in politics—an intolerable situation for a society striving for justice and equality.

The movement strongly condemns all forms of violence, especially those aimed at silencing women in the political arena. According to National Coordinator Wancy Alexis, “Politics must remain a space for dialogue and respect, not a breeding ground for intimidation and abuse.” The organization reaffirmed its support for Ms. Michel and its determination to combat practices that hinder women’s inclusion in decision-making processes.

Additionally, Mouvman Fanm EDE continues to demand the removal of the three advisors implicated in the corruption scandal involving the Banque Nationale de Crédit (BNC). Their continued presence in the Transitional Presidential Council (TPC) undermines its credibility and jeopardizes the integrity of the political transition in Haiti.

In a climate where violence seems to erode political institutions, the Mouvman Fanm EDE calls for collective action to restore confidence in democratic mechanisms. It urges political and social actors to condemn such acts and to promote values of respect and equality, ensuring that women like Marjory Michel can continue to play a pivotal role in transforming Haitian society.

The Mouvman Fanm EDE concludes by reaffirming its commitment to an inclusive, respectful, and violence-free political space. Driven by a quest for justice and equity, this fight remains a priority in building a democratic Haiti where everyone’s rights, particularly those of women, are protected and valued.
