Hinche in Mourning: University Professor Killed in Incident at Government Complex

November 17, 2025

On Monday in Hinche, tragedy struck when university professor Junior Chérilus was fatally shot in front of the administrative complex. The confrontation involved employees of the Ministry of the Interior and the security agents responsible for the building, amid ongoing tensions.

The conflict began on October 7, when the Central Departmental Delegation demanded that civil servants present original appointment letters. Considered abusive by some staff, this decision led to the office’s closure for more than a month and created lasting mistrust.

The situation escalated on November 6 when Delegate Occean Frédérique ordered the reopening of the offices. Employees, still in disagreement, attempted to shut the building again, provoking a confrontation with security agents, who opened fire to disperse the protest.

Junior Chérilus, a passerby at the time, was fatally struck by a bullet. A security agent identified as Jeff was also wounded in the wrist, underscoring the severity of the violence.

The professor’s death caused widespread emotion in Hinche and the academic community. No local authority has yet issued an official statement, but citizens and students are demanding a rapid investigation and sanctions against those responsible.
