Haitian Journalism In Mourning: Matiado Vilmé Passes Away After A Long Battle

February 4, 2026

The Haitian press has suffered a major loss with the death of journalist Matiado Vilmé, which occurred on Sunday, February 1, 2026. She succumbed to cancer after battling the disease for several years.

A former correspondent for Voice of America (VOA), she stood out for her professional rigor, strong sense of responsibility, and constant attention to the most vulnerable. Her career was marked by a steadfast commitment to useful and responsible journalism.

Despite her illness, Matiado Vilmé never gave up her profession. After major surgery in July 2024 and several rounds of chemotherapy, she continued to work with a determination praised by her peers.

Her courage was particularly evident in December 2024, during the shooting that accompanied the reopening of the State University of Haiti Hospital, where she showed exemplary composure by assisting injured colleagues. Her passing leaves a deep void, but her name will remain associated with humane, bold, and socially engaged journalism.
