According to him, absolute priority remains security, without which no credible electoral process is conceivable.
Antoine Michon recalled that Haiti has not held elections since 2016 and that no elected leader has governed the country for several years. This situation, deemed abnormal and politically dangerous, makes a return to democratic legitimacy through the ballot box essential.
An electoral calendar mentioning August 2026 exists, but it remains conditional on effective territorial control. The ambassador insists on the need to guarantee voters safe access to polling stations and candidates the ability to campaign freely.
France’s position, as expressed in this interview, is pragmatic and uncompromising. Paris supports elections but refuses any haste in a context where insecurity would prevent real and equitable participation by the Haitian population.
