Floods in Cap-Haïtien: Government Steps Up Relief Efforts

December 10, 2024

The city of Cap-Haïtien has been severely affected by devastating floods triggered by heavy rains, resulting in significant human and material losses. According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office over the weekend, this natural disaster has impacted several neighborhoods, leaving thousands of families in critical condition and causing extensive damage to local infrastructure. The provisional toll reports four deaths and numerous displaced individuals in urgent need of assistance.

In response to the crisis, the Haitian government has announced immediate mobilization under the leadership of Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé. The statement outlines that several entities, including the Ministry of the Interior, the Directorate of Civil Protection (DPC), and the Economic and Social Assistance Fund (FAES), have been engaged in emergency response efforts. Security forces, including the Haitian National Police and the Armed Forces, are also involved in securing affected areas and providing logistical support.

Initial actions on the ground include the distribution of food kits, potable water, and temporary shelter supplies to affected families. The statement also highlights that joint teams are working to evacuate flooded areas, clear blocked roads, and secure the most vulnerable neighborhoods. Specialized equipment such as pumps and bulldozers has been deployed to accelerate interventions.

In the same statement, the Prime Minister praised the resilience of the victims and thanked the mobilized teams for their dedication during this difficult time. He also called for national and international solidarity to bolster ongoing efforts. While expressing his determination to address this tragedy, he reiterated the importance of restoring hope to the communities impacted by this ordeal.
