Digicel Fiber Optic Outage Causes Major Service Disruptions in Key Areas

March 24, 2025

On Friday, March 21, Jean Philippe Brun, CEO of Digicel Haiti, informed customers of a major service outage that occurred the previous evening at 9:00 PM. The disruption was caused by a break in the underground fiber optic link connecting the data centers in Turgeau and along National Road 1. As a result, half of Digicel’s internet, SMS, and MonCash users were affected, along with all customers using the regional dialing codes 509, 500, and 202.

According to Mr. Brun, Digicel’s technical teams are actively working to restore the connection. However, the repair efforts are significantly hindered by the fact that the affected area is classified as a high-risk zone. Security concerns in the region are making access difficult and further delaying the restoration process.

This outage comes amid ongoing challenges for Digicel, which continues to grapple with infrastructure instability and security threats in Haiti. Frequent fiber optic disruptions—often caused by vandalism or accidents—highlight the vulnerability of the country’s telecommunications network.
