The trial concerning the assassination of Jovenel Moïse opened in Miami with damning testimony.
Dr. Jean Armel Demorcy, Haiti’s chief forensic examiner, described Thursday the condition of the former president’s body, three days after the July 7, 2021 attack.
Before the federal jury, Dr. Demorcy stated that he identified “about a dozen entry wounds.” He pointed to a bullet to the heart as the fatal injury, explaining that it passed through the lungs before “destroying the heart.”
The forensic expert also described the president’s head as “completely deformed” by an impact, suggesting that some shots may have been fired at close range, possibly after death.
Four men, accused of recruiting Colombian commandos, are being tried for the crime.
The defense is challenging the reliability of the autopsy, citing possible corruption.
