Abandoned State University Hospital of Haiti Burned Down by Gangs

February 18, 2025

On Thursday, February 13, 2025, the State University Hospital of Haiti (HUEH), located in the heart of Port-au-Prince, was the target of an arson attack carried out by armed gangs. Videos circulating on social media show flames engulfing the premises of this iconic institution, commonly known as the General Hospital. Local authorities have yet to release an official report regarding potential casualties or the extent of the material damage.

This act of violence occurs amid a surge in attacks against Haiti’s critical infrastructure. In December 2024, an attempt to reopen HUEH was already marred by a deadly shooting, attributed to gangs, which claimed the lives of two journalists and a police officer. These tragic events highlight the severe security challenges Haiti faces, further hindering reconstruction and development efforts.

Haitian authorities, in collaboration with international partners, are working to restore and secure the country’s vital infrastructure. However, the persistent insecurity complicates these efforts, underscoring the urgent need for sustainable solutions to stabilize the situation and protect institutions essential to the population.
