A new legislative effort in support of Haitian beneficiaries of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) has been launched in the United States Senate. Democratic Senators Ed Markey and Lisa Blunt Rochester introduced a bill on June 17 aimed at guaranteeing the continuation of TPS protections until April 20, 2029. The initiative is supported by Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and sixteen other Democratic lawmakers.
The proposed legislation would require the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to keep Haiti on the list of countries eligible for TPS despite efforts by President Donald Trump’s administration to terminate the program. Supporters of the bill argue that Haiti’s security and humanitarian conditions remain incompatible with the forced return of hundreds of thousands of Haitian nationals living and working legally in the United States.
The proposal forms part of a broader Democratic Party effort to protect Haitian TPS beneficiaries. Last April, the U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation extending TPS protections for approximately 350,000 Haitians in a rare bipartisan vote, while several court challenges continue to contest the Trump administration’s attempts to end the program.
