2026 Winter Olympics: Toussaint Louverture Removed from Haitian Team Uniforms, Controversy Grows

February 7, 2026

At the 2026 Winter Olympic Games in Italy, the Haitian team stands out with unique, hand-painted uniforms inspired by the work of visual artist Edouard Duval-Carrié.

Initially, the figure of national hero Toussaint Louverture appeared at the center of the outfits, mounted on a red horse and holding a blue serpent, a Vodou symbol.

However, the Haitian Olympic Committee demanded his removal, judging the representation too political. Only the riderless horse now remains.

Designer Stella Jean, based in Italy, created Haiti’s Olympic uniforms for the second time.

Produced with the support of former ski champion Pietro Vitalini, these outfits are the only hand-painted uniforms in the competition.

Despite the controversy, athletes, including skier Richardson Viano, say they wear the designs with pride. Haiti is participating in the Games with two athletes competing in different skiing disciplines.

Artist Duval-Carrié expressed surprise at the controversial decision.
